Camp Wolverton
A picturesque camp in the beautiful red fir forest of Sequoia National Park, Camp Wolverton is also a gateway to the wilderness of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
The camp has 3 sites with a total capacity of 70 people. Hot showers are included in your camping fee, but no electricity or RV hook up is available. Open fires are allowed in existing campfire pits, except during periods of extreme fire hazard.
Camp Wolverton is a tent-camping location. The camp driveway is paved for light-use only and the camp has very little available parking, almost none of it on flat ground. There are no RV accessible campsites and no RV hookups. RV’s can be parked, but not lived-in, at the end of Wolverton Road, about 1/2-mile from camp.
The National Park Service adivises that vehicle length be limited to “22 feet (6.7m) on 12 miles between Potwisha Campground and Giant Forest in Sequoia Park” because of sharp curves and 5-8% grade.
Troops and families find a variety of uses for Camp Wolverton. Most people use it as a base camp prior to leaving on a long term hike - spending only a night or two in camp. Others spend an entire week, setting up their own summer camp. Their adult and boy leaders provide the in-camp programs while Park Service's Ranger walks are available to compliment the troop's programs.
Nearby attractions include the world's largest living tree, a limestone cavern, historic buildings, a nature center, fishable streams, and Tokapah Falls.
Backpacking opportunities abound at Camp Wolverton. The camp is only a quarter of a mile from the Pear Lake and Moose Lake trailhead. The Twin Lakes trailhead is one mile away. The Silver Bearpaw, Silver Cloud and Wolverton-to-Whitsett hikes all start from this camp.
Alternatively, bring your unit or your family for a week or weekend of fun in the High Sierra! Many troops plan weekend family camps at Wolverton - why don't you?
For you and your neighbors to see and appreciate wildlife, please note that pets are not permitted on any of the trails in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. In campgrounds and picnic areas, pets must be kept on a leash at all times. The leash must be less than 6 feet (1.8 meters) long. For your pet's safety, please don't leave pets in hot cars. Pets cannot be left tied and unattended at any time.
Camp Wolverton is open from mid-June until late-August. Plan to arrive at camp before dark. Park Service regulations require that all foodstuffs must be stored in bear-proof lockers. Each campsite includes a bear-proof food locker and there is a large walk-in food locker in central camp.
